Sharjah 24: Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD) carries on the role of conformity and calibration of commercial scales in central markets and retail stores, as part of its plan to strengthen its control programmes in the field of metrology to put an end to fraud and scales manipulation. The Department carried out 4712 calibrations of commercial and gold scales to verify their accuracy and safety.
According to data issued by SEDD, the number of commercial scales that have been calibrated has reached 3,736, while the number of gold scales that have been calibrated has reached 976. On the other hand, the conformity scales during the examinations hit 92%, while nonconformity rate reached 8% with the specifications and standards approved in the country.

Commenting on that, Sultan Abdullah bin Hadda Al Suwaidi, SEDD Chairman, stressed that the Department focuses on creating an ideal commercial environment with a high culture of awareness and impartiality in buying and selling procedures in all economic sectors, following the highest international standards and practices. These results confirm the active role played by SEDD to ensure the safety of all economic practices in the emirate's markets, and to enhance the economic and commercial position of Sharjah.

He pointed out that the Department organises inspection campaigns on a regular basis through a comprehensive field plan, which is implemented throughout the year by the specialised work team of commercial officers. Such thing confirms SEDD’s concerns about controlling the markets, spreading awareness among traders and consumers, and limiting the negative practices that some traders may resort to.
