Sharjah 24: Algeria, the nation that reigned supreme in the last two editions of the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST), is gearing up to once again dominate the Arab world’s largest contest for sportswomen, at the tournament’s upcoming fifth edition, which runs from February 2 – 12, 2020.
Algerian players will be competing in AWST’s sporting disciplines of basketball, volleyball, karate, archery and shooting, to continue their lead in winning the highest number of medals as they did in AWST’s 2016 and 2018 editions.

At AWST 2018, Algeria scooped 16 medals in total, including 7 gold, 7 silver and 2 bronze recognitions, winning in karate, shooting and athletics. In the 2016 edition of AWST too, Algerian sportswomen won the maximum accolades, returning home with 9 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze medals.

Her Excellency Nada Askar Al Naqbi, Deputy Head of AWST’s Supreme Organising Committee and Head of its Executive Committee, and Director General of Sharjah Women’s Sports said: “Algeria has established an unbeatable track record in AWST over its past two editions. The nation is known not just regionally, but globally, for its high-level achievements in various types of sports.”

She added: “We hope to see Algeria continue its winning spree in AWST, with incredible performances in the tournament’s upcoming edition. We wish Algerian participants the best for AWST 2020, and salute their commitment to furthering the integral role of sports in the development and stability of societies.”

The Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST) was launched in 2012, under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Sharjah Women’s Sports (SWS). AWST is held biennially in Sharjah and organised by SWS.
