Sharjah 24: Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) said that the Geological Park in Buhais area of the Central Region is considered the first geological reserve in the UAE, and highlights the geological features in the region.
She confirmed that the Geological Park, which was opened by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, Monday morning, is characterised by unique designs through which it is possible to learn about the most prominent geological features in the region, such as Al Hajar Mountain Range, other individual mountains, as well as the gravel plains and sand dunes.

The park includes two archaeological sites that contribute to enhancing knowledge of the history of human settlement in this area.

She stressed that the Geological Park project comes in line with the vision and directions of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, with the aim of introducing visitors and residents to the geological importance of Buhais Mountain and the surrounding areas, and providing an opportunity for visitors of the region to explore the exhibits, and tour the outer garden.

Al Suwaidi pointed out that the distinctive site of the Park in particular and Buhais Mountain in general includes historical evidence on how the local nature was formed not less than 93 million years ago, explaining that the site is rich in fossilised remains of many ancient marine creatures that settled in shallow seas, which were submerging most of the land in the UAE until very recently, from the geological perspective.
