Sultan bin Ahmed meets President of Portugal News Agency

Sharjah 24: Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Media Council, met on Friday morning in Lisbon, with the Chairman of the Portuguese News Agency, LUSA, as part of the Council's efforts to build bridges of communication and knowledge exchange with international news agencies and media institutions.
On arrival at LUSA headquarters, Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed and his accompanying delegation were received by the Nicolau Santos, President of LUSA; Luisa Meireles, Editor-in-Chief, and Rita Vaz Vilho, Marketing Chief Officer at the Agency.

Welcoming Sharjah’s delegation, the Portuguese officials wished them a pleasant stay in Lisbon and expressed their pride in the visit, which will open new horizons of cooperation between the two sides and their media organisations, as well as those in the Middle East Region. The two sides also exchanged cordial talks and discussed issues of common interest.

Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed extended his sincere thanks to the President of the Portuguese News Agency for the warm welcome and the opportunity to closely see firsthand experience of the Agency in the service of media and media personnel.

He also briefed the Portuguese officials on the work of the Council and the various media institutions under its umbrella, which are the driver of the media in the Emirate of Sharjah, noting that the functions of these institutions vary between radio networks, television stations and press and electronic works that provide free of charge media services. He also briefed him about the media investment institution tasked with attracting various international media entities to be based in Sharjah, through the provision of privileges that are rarely found in any other region.

During the meeting, Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi explained that the Sharjah Media Council, represented by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, holds one of the most important international forums for government communication, which aims to create a media system capable of keeping pace with the rapid acceleration in the advanced media and to confront the distort the noble media message, inviting them to be part of the event in its next edition.

During his speech, Chairman of Sharjah Media Council higlighted the interest of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, in this forum, and his keenness to improve government communication he practices personally and almost daily through direct communication with radio and television programmes that raise people’s issues, solve them, and overcome the difficulties they face in various aspects of their lives.

Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi also pointed out that the presence of the Sharjah delegation in Portugal at this time is to open the Sharjah Archaeology Exhibition at Museu Nacional de Arqueologia (National Museum of Archeology) in the Portuguese capital Lisbon, which is organised by the Sharjah Archeology Authority in cooperation with the Institute of Archeology at the University of Nova Lisbon where artifacts from different eras spanning more than 800 thousand years are on display. Sheikh Sultan invited the Portuguese officials to visit the exhibition and learn about its collections and exhibits and to familiarise themselves with Sharjah culture.

For their part, the Portuguese side expressed their admiration for the media movement in the Emirate of Sharjah and the support and patronage of the leadership and the government for the work and efforts of the media institutions in the emirate, reiterating that the reputation of Sharjah in the fields of culture in particular, has reached a wide global borders, highlighting and praising the efforts of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah in disseminating the UAE and Arab culture.

The President of the Portuguese News Agency praised the idea behind the International Government Communication Forum, which he described as an initiative that contributes to making societies more interdependent and understanding of the role of the media, and enhances the role of the individual towards his community, and gives him the opportunity to give his point of view and discuss with officials, thus helping to reach the right decisions related to the affairs of society and its members. He also expressed his readiness and that of his team to visit Sharjah and participate in the activities of the Forum in its next edition.

The Sharjah delegation, led by Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, toured the departments and sections of the Portuguese News Agency, where they learned about the work of the press editorial department, information exchange department, monitoring department, photography department, archiving department and local and international correspondent services department.

Concluding the visit, Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi presented the President of the Portuguese News Agency with the monument of Sharjah, the capital of Islamic culture, and a book about Sharjah monuments, one of the most important publications of the Sharjah Government Media Bureau.

The meeting was attended by Tariq Saeed Allay, Chairman of Sharjah Government Media Bureau (SGMB); Hassan Yacoub Al Mansouri, Secretary General of the Sharjah Media Council; and Marketing Coordinator at the Portuguese News Agency.
