Sharjah24 – dpa: French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Algeria on Wednesday for his first visit to the north African country since he took office in May.

During his one-day visit, Macron is expected to meet President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia. His schedule also includes a walk around central Algiers and a meeting with civil society figures.

The visit aims to underline the deep ties between the two countries - Alegeria is a former colony of France - and strengthen economic links, Elysee Palace sources said ahead of the visit, where Macron is also expected to discuss regional issues including Libya and the Sahel region.

Macron last visited Algeria in February, when he was campaigning for the presidency.

Ahead of the visit, Elysee sources hinted that Macron would not repeat his comment during the campaign trip that colonization had been a crime against humanity.
