Sharjah 24: The Health Promotion Department, HPD, at the Supreme Council for Family Affairs in Sharjah (SCFA) has recently launched an online awareness-raising series about nutrition essentials for mothers and children.
This comes as part of the HPD’s relentless efforts to enhance and disseminate healthy behaviors in society, raise mother’s awareness about kid’s healthy eating and how to plan properly for daily meals and food portions to cater to the needs of children at various stage of their lives, so as to make sure that both mothers and children are enjoying a disease-free life.

Focused on key four thematic areas, the series included the essential food items for pregnant women with a particular emphasis on the negative impacts of food additives, the importance of breastfeeding and the types of children’s food supplements at their various stages of life, and the significance of physical activity in strengthening physical and mental health.

The first theme touched on the daily calories and food portions needed during pregnancy and the effect of the loss of some nutrients on the health of the fetus, while the second theme included tips about the importance of breastfeeding and a healthy diet for the nursing mother.

The third one explained the consequences of malnutrition with examples of healthy meals that can be given to the child and recommendations for the mother to feed her child properly. The last theme included information on the important nutrients for children’s growth from the age of 2 to 4 years and the number and size of daily portions for each food group within this age and the important nutrients for their development.

Her Excellency Iman Rashid Saif, HPD Director, underlined that the new series comes as part of the Department’s keenness on achieving the highest levels of health of mothers and children, in line with the directives of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs in Sharjah, aimed at supporting Sharjah’s efforts to become a healthy, child- and adolescent-friendly, as well as a disease-free environment.

“Given the impact of the healthy diet on public health, we have cooperated with health educators and specialists to release a series of awareness tips about the importance of adopting a healthy diet for mothers and children,” she explained.

The HPD Director highlighted the importance of this series in raising awareness about healthy eating in accordance with well-considered and scientific foundations.
