Sharjah24: The Friends of Arthritis Patients Society (FAPS) in Sharjah has announced a host of awareness-raising activities and sport events to mark the World Arthritis Day (WAD), which is observed on October 12th of every year.
In a press conference held Tuesday, the Society, which operates under the umbrella of the Health Education Department at the Supreme Council for Family Affairs (SCFA), said that its outreach activities will cover different areas of Sharjah and will run till October 30.

Present at the press conference, which was staged at the headquarters of SCFA, were Waheeda Abdul Aziz, Head of the Friends of Arthritis Patients Society (FAPS), Brigadier Arif Bin Hudaib, director of media and public relations department at Sharjah Police, and Eng. Fathi Jabr Afaneh, General Manager of Fast Contracting Company, as well as Dr. Ayman Al-Massri, Rheumatologist at French Medical Centre Sharjah.

It’s time to exercise
Waheeda Abdul Aziz lauded the unlimited support of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, SCFA, and her directives to offer patients with arthritis appropriate treatment.

“Celebrating the World Arthritis Day is yet another way of expressing FAPS’ solidarity with patients. To that end, we have launched an

awareness-raising programme titled “It's time to exercise’. This programme includes a number of outreach campaigns to be carried out in cooperation with various institutions in Sharjah and with the participation of rheumatologists. These campaigns will be accompanied by sports and motor activities aimed at stimulating the community to practice sports as a way of preventing arthritis.

As part of the programme, a major awareness day will be observed in collaboration with the University of Sharjah and a number of federal institutions on 26 October near Khalid Lagoon, in addition to “One Hour Walk” event, in association with the Emirates Association for Retired Citizens, and Al Maliha Club. This particular activity aims to raise awareness on osteoporosis and will involve distributing health leaflets, providing free medical examinations for participants.

The programme also features another major awareness day to be marked in collaboration with Emirates Red Crescent.

8th annual marathon
During the press conference, Waheeda Abdul Aziz announced the date of 8th annual marathon. Accordingly, the marathon will be held in February 2020 under the theme “It’s time to exercise”, to stimulate the public to exercise and adopt healthy lifestyles.

Commitment to social responsibility
For his Brigadier Arif Bin Hudaib, said: “In line with its commitment to social responsibility and ensuring the happiness of the community, Sharjah Police is very much interested to take part in awareness-raising events and activities. We will do our best to help raise people’s awareness on chronic diseases and educate them on how much important is to exercise as a way of preventing diseases.

Meanwhile, Eng. Fathi Afaneh stressed that Fast Contracting has always been keen to support the work of all bodies and institutions in Sharjah while Dr Al Massri recommended developing rheumatism awareness programmes, saying that such programmes play significant role in educating the community on the risks of this disease.

Friends of Arthritis Patients Society was established in 2008 to raise awareness on the symptoms and causes of Arthritis, its ways of prevention, and the latest available treatments. The Society was also formed to provide support for patients with arthritis. This year, the FAPS organised 40+ educational and societal programmes in addition to more than 16 awareness lectures.

Last year, the Society’s numerous activities benefited more than 7500 people with some 5000 people joined its activities.
