Sharjah 24: In cooperation with the University of Sharjah “UOS” and industry partners in the Emirate, Sharjah Economic Development Department “SEDD” launched Sharjah Design and Innovation Award in its fourth edition. The award comes as a result of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to invest in the human element and to cooperate with all the institutions to contribute to the real development, promote research, and support innovation and knowledge in the field of economic development.
His Excellency Sultan Abdullah bin Hadda Al Suwaidi, SEDD Chairman, said that SEDD has moved for years to work from issuing licenses and monitoring facilities to managing the business environment. He added that the Department moves from investment in economic growth to investment in integrated human capital and knowledge, which is one of the components of sustainable development.

In addition, the Department introduced the initiative for the first time in the emirate in 2015 as an award at the level of Sharjah. It should be noted that the award aims at supporting and adopting projects and research for students related to designs, innovations and applied ideas that can find applications in the public and private sectors.

This award is released in partnership with the productive sector in the Emirate that work with SEDD to attain sustainable development and contribute to the implementation of business requirements so that Sharjah will gain a healthy business environment and its residents enjoy a competitive quality of life.

From his side, Dr. Amr Saleh, the Economic Advisor in SEDD and project coordinator, clarified that the Award Evaluation Committee has determined the terms of project evaluation. It is worth mentioning that the project should be new and innovative, and should have an impact on the society and attract companies and factories in the Emirate of Sharjah. Likely, such project should be in line with the social and cultural values and aspirations of the Emirate, or contribute to the development of the internal working environment of companies, factories or the general environment of the Emirate. In addition, the project must be environmental friendly and add to the Emirates values. The Economic Advisor intensified that these objectives reflect the competitive advantage and mental image of Sharjah and serve the special development model, which was established by His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah.

Furthermore, the Department, in cooperation with UOS, gave three introductory workshops at the University's headquarters, specifically at the colleges of engineering, fine arts and science. Number of deans of the faculties, the teachers and the students attended these workshops, in order to introduce the award to the and how to submit them as well as to clarify the means of choosing the three winning projects at the university level.

Moreover, the award has produced a number of successful models and projects in previous years such as a unique design for a heritage village and Khor Fakkan Marine Station that was done by the College of Fine Arts. Also, a wheelchair project was presented by the College of Engineering as well as one of the outstanding projects inspired by the emirate's visions that is the "thousand lighthouse “museum.
