Sharjah24: Sharjah Children Biennial (SCB) is championing values of giving and kindness by trying to create a better future for young refugees who have been forced to flee their homes in search of a more secure life.
During its participation at the recently concluded Abu Dhabi Art 2017, SCB sold 38 artworks that were part of the Biennial’s fifth edition. The proceeds from the artwork sales will go to support the Sharjah-based non-profit, The Big Heart Foundation (TBHF), in alignment with their commitment to further a charitable cause in every edition.
The organising committee of SCB’s fifth edition displayed a total of 64 artworks for sale at Abu Dhabi Art 2017, of which 15 were physically displayed at the exhibit and 49 were available for viewing on smart tablets.
Reem BinKaram, President of SCB’s fifth edition, said: “Each year, the Sharjah Children Biennial aims to give back to the community by supporting a humanitarian cause, in alignment with the values of giving and solidarity fostered by the wise leadership of the United Arab Emirates.”
“The fourth edition’s sales proceeds covered the cost of cancer treatment of a child. In this edition, we have collaborated with The Big Heart Foundation to support refugee children, by catering to some of their basic needs in the hope that it will help alleviate their sufferings and bring them joy,” BinKaram added.
The artworks were selected from a total of 376, which participated at the fifth edition. Themed ‘A World as Big as Your Imagination’, it took place from 15 January to 15 February 2017. The art was curated under three categories: Architecture Design, Environment, and Fantasy and Reality.
Curator of SCB’s fifth edition, Dana Al Mazrouei, said: “The selected artworks were characterised by a high level of nuance and artistry. We selected 64 artworks from the edition’s collection to be showcased at Abu Dhabi Art 2017, which received much admiration from the fair’s visitors. In the coming weeks we will display more artworks for sale at various locations in Sharjah and Dubai, as a continuation of the fifth SCB’s charitable drive.”
Young visitors to the SCB stand at Abu Dhabi Art 2017 had the opportunity to express their creativity on a LEGO wall. With various pieces of LEGO, children created a myriad of structures, from monuments to abstract shapes – each representative of the child’s individuality and sources of inspiration.
A first-of-its-kind in the UAE and greater GCC region, Sharjah Children Biennial is organised by the Sharjah Children Centres, a subsidiary of the Rubu’ Qarn Foundation for Creating Leaders and Innovators. Founded in 2008, SCB is an international cultural and artistic event dedicated to children around the world. It aims to nurture children's creative talents and unlock their potential in various artistic domains, in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
