Sharjah Ruler attends honorary doctorate ceremony in UoS

Sharjah 24: His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah (UoS), attended the ceremony for presenting the first honorary doctorate certificates from the University of Sharjah to Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, His Excellency Abdulrahman bin Mohammad Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention, and Dr, Arif Al Nooryani, CEO of Al Qassimi Hospital, in the main building of the University in Sharjah.
The attendees watched a documentary film about His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah presenting an honorary doctorate to Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, which was given to her in recognition of her distinguished humanitarian and social achievements locally, regionally, and globally, as well as her pioneering and qualitative initiatives, such as the establishment of the Sharjah Ladies Club and the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, which oversees a network of important institutions and associations that serve the social sector in the Emirate of Sharjah and benefit from Her Highness's generous care and follow-up.



In her speech on this occasion, Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi expressed her heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, the Board of Trustees of the University of Sharjah, and the University of Sharjah Administration for bestowing upon her this prestigious degree, which she is especially proud of because it was bestowed upon her by a university of distinguished scientific and academic standing on the local, regional, and international levels. She emphasised that this honour is a strong motivation to continue for more humanitarian, social, and scientific achievements.

His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah presented honorary doctorate certificates to His Excellency Abdulrahman bin Mohammed Al Owais and Dr. Arif Al Nooryani, congratulating them on their achievement, thanking them for their great efforts, and wishing them success.



The University of Sharjah's Board of Trustees presented the foundations on which the University of Sharjah relied on in awarding honorary doctorate degrees, including that the degree be awarded to a person known and recognised for excellence, who inspire his community and future generations. The degree is awarded to academics, and those who have made significant contributions in the fields of science, social science, economics and served humanity at the national and international levels.

Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi received the honorary doctorate for her contributions to science, society, and humanitarianism on a local, regional, and international level. 



Locally, Her Highness was awarded the Order of the of National Work Female Pioneers in the Arab World in recognition of her role in social work and unending giving in the service of women's issues, as well as an honorary award from Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak (Mother of the Emirates) during the Arab Women's Day celebrations in Abu Dhabi in 2002, The Latifa Childhood Creativity Award, the Medal of Volunteer work in Sharjah in 2006, the Emirates Business Women Award in 2007 and the International Award of Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak for Arab Youth, as the most supportive person for youth affairs in the United Arab Emirates in 2014.

On the Arabic level, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi received the Badge of Loyalty and Giving in appreciation of her extraordinary efforts and unlimited giving for the advancement Arab women from the Arab Regional Office in Tunisia in 2007, and the First Arab Lady Award in Support of Arab Women and Family Issues in the Fourth Session in 2007 from the Arab Women Participation Studies Office in Paris.



In 2013, Her Highness was named the Most Inspiring Arab Woman and received the King Abdullah II Award for Creativity for the ninth session "2015-2016" for research submitted by the Department of Health Education in Sharjah on "Sharjah's innovative role in childcare". In recognition of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi's efforts and role in the development of the education system, the trustees of the Sharjah Award for Educational Excellence named her as the Educational Supporting Personality in the "25" edition of the award in 2019.

Her Highness was given the title of "Eminent Advocate" by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in 2013, in appreciation of her continual commitment to provide the greatest possible assistance to the world’s least fortunate and for her support to people who suffer poverty and war as a result of conflicts. She was awarded  the Golden Pea Award from the German Cultural Centre for Children’s Stories, in recognition of her efforts in humanitarian and social work , her advocacy for refugee children, the needy and cancer patients, and her launch of initiatives that support women’s empowerment in all fields at the level of the United Arab Emirates, the Arab region and the world, the Princess Benedikte Award from Denmark, for her great contributions to the development of girls through her continued support for the Olave Baden-Powell Society – WAGGGS  which is affiliated with the World Bureau of Girl Guides in Copenhagen in 2007, and she is the ambassador of the International Federation against childhood Cancer.



The honorary doctorate was awarded on His Excellency Abdulrahman bin Mohammed Al Owais, in recognition of his distinguished national role in advancing the nation's progress, as well as his contributions to all that supports the nation's progress, ambitions, and goals, and all that realises development strategies, as well as his efforts and initiatives in facing the effects of (COVID-19) and his wise and thoughtful measures taken to improve the conditions resulted from the pandemic. Al Owais is also known for his love of Arabic art and his support and sponsorship of literary and historical works, works of art and international competitions.

Dr. Arif Al Nooryani, CEO of Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharjah, was awarded this degree in recognition of what he has given to his country and in recognition of his knowledge, experience, skills, medical and cognitive excellence, and for his exceptional role in the advancement of the medical sector in the United Arab Emirates, keeping pace with global trends.

Al Nooryani's medical achievements, including complex surgery, have earned him numerous awards and accolades at the local, regional, and international levels, including the Arab Doctor Award for the year 2020 awarded by the Executive Bureau of Arab Health Ministers.



Abdulrahman bin Mohammed Al Owais, the Minister of Health and Prevention, said in his speech that His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah's foresight over the last four decades has opened up new opportunities in several fields. As an educator of generations and a builder of culture and the Renaissance, His Highness aspires for the growth and advancement of all members of society. His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah was and is still present as a parent, teacher, and mentor, according to Al Owais, who is happy to be a student at his school.

In his speech, Dr, Arif Al Nooryani expressed his heartfelt gratitude to His Highness, the Ruler of Sharjah, and the Board of Trustees of the University of Sharjah for the great honour of granting him an honorary doctorate, which symbolises appreciation for the country's entire scientific community and medical sector.

Al Nooryani praised His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah's unrestricted support for the Emirate's health and medical sector and medics, as well as His Highness' support of Al Qassimi Hospital and the provision and upgrading by latest medical devices and innovative technologies, transforming it into a prestigious modern medical centre. 

The ceremony was attended by a number of members of the Board of Trustees of the University of Sharjah (UoS) and His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of UoS.
