Palestinian political parties Hamas and Fatah signed a reconciliation agreement in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Thursday, as part of an effort to end a decade-long rift.
''This step will strengthen the Palestinian position so as to address challenges facing the Palestinian cause. It serves as the only key guarantee to realise aspirations of the Palestinian people for freedom, independence, end of Israeli occupation and establishment of the Palestinian independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital on the borderline of 4 June 1967,'' the Cairo-based pan Arab body said in a statement.
The Arab League congratulated Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian people and the Palestinian Islamic and national factions.
It also thanked Egypt for its efforts to end divisions among Palestinian factions and achieve the reconciliation.
