Biden to Netanyahu: Protect Gaza civilians for US support

April 05, 2024 / 1:36 AM
Sharjah 24 – AFP: President Joe Biden conveyed to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that US support for Israel hinges on the safeguarding of civilians in Gaza. This message from the White House comes following the killing of seven aid workers in Gaza by Israel, which sparked international condemnation and calls for restraint.
In the UK, where three nationals were among the victims, over 600 lawyers urged the government to halt arms exports to Israel. Meanwhile, Doctors Without Borders accused Israel of systematically destroying Gaza's healthcare system, describing the dire medical situation.

During their conversation, Biden labeled the Israeli strike as "unacceptable" and demanded an "immediate ceasefire." He emphasized the need for Israel to take concrete steps to address civilian harm and ensure the safety of aid workers. The White House stated that US policy towards Gaza would be influenced by Israel's actions in this regard.

While reiterating unwavering support for Israel's defense, the Biden administration expects Israel to take significant humanitarian measures and reduce violence against civilians and aid workers. Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin expressed outrage at the killings in a call with his Israeli counterpart.

As pressure mounts on Biden, especially during an election year, there are calls for the US to link military aid to Israel with adherence to restraint in Gaza. The bodies of the aid workers, including citizens from Australia, Britain, Poland, and the US, were repatriated, while the Palestinian employee was buried in Gaza.
