Sharjah 24: The Department of Social Services, Khorfakkan Branch, organised a large celebration in the Old Souq Sharq, on the occasion of the mid of Shaban, which is one of the traditional, popular and religious occasions.
Ahmed Nasser Al Naqbi, Director of the Khorfakkan Branch, said that it is not unusual for the Department of Social Services to highlight such events as they carry a lot of spiritual and popular significance, influencing the local ands the Arab community, enhancing interest in heritage and customs, and reviving and preserving old customs.

Al Naqbi added that the event is a preparation for the holy month of Ramadan, which led the Department to select Souq Sharq, one of the most popular markets in Khorfakkan and the oldest in the region and was recently renovated under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, in order to preserve its symbolism and importance to the people of Khorfakkan.

Al Naqbi stressed that the market has become a destination for everyone, especially tourists, because it preserves the old character. The market is also a favourite destination for the elderly. Members of the Asala Club and members of the Department participated in the event, by organising workshops on heritage crafts for the public.

The director of the Khorfakkan branch pointed out that several parties participated in the ceremony, including Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), which distributed sweets to children.  Schools students presented artistic paintings and folk songs.
