Syrian artist turns Damascus culture into jewelry

January 13, 2022 / 5:22 PM
Sharjah24 – Reuters: When he was only twelve years old, Majdi al-Kuzbari created his first piece of art using a horseshoe to make a ring adorned with small Syrian designs.
He was able to use a non-decorative object to make accessories.

Now, the 75-year-old designer makes an array of sculpted accessories that are inspired by Syrian heritage, especially famous Damascene scenes.

Originally an interior architect, the artist had to leave his job as the industry took a painful blow during the war, driving him to Lebanon where he struggled as a refugee.

In 2014, he came back to Syria and revived his passion.

Kuzbari's accessories are reimaginings of different famous places in Syria, including the Umayyad mosque, old alleys, and others.

Kuzbari's products are around 100.000 Syrian Liras (29$) each, a relatively high price within the market.

The turnout, however, is growing, particularly as his products are marketed on social media.
